Defining the News
Vice President Sara Duterte on Tuesday traded barbs with Sen. Risa Hontiveros, who inquired into the P10-million budget allocation for “Isang Kaibigan” books, a children’s book authored by the Vice President.
“Her problem is my name is on the book, which will be given to children. And those children have parents who are voters. And my name will be spread throughout wherever those books will go. Madam chair, we commit to send tomorrow everyone a copy of the book,” Duterte said in Filipino, asserting the senator’s concerns were politically motivated.
“I am asking a question, as a lawmaker to the head of agency of an executive office, in this budget hearing,” Hontiveros said in a mix of English and Filipino. The Vice President, in turn, criticized the senator. She referenced their past interactions during the 2016 elections and implied Hontiveros sought support from Duterte’s allies in Davao during her campaign — only to become one of the earliest critics of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, once elected.
