An average of eight people per day died of COVID in the week to Friday. But it’s estimated only one in 10 people are reporting positive rapid test results.

There were 2560 cases of COVID-19 reported last week in Victoria – equating to 366 new cases each day.Authorities will still collate data on positive PCR tests, hospitalisations, deaths and wastewater results.

“Using a RAT remains critical to help with early detection, protect others, and allow for care and treatment at the right time,”“However, with a decline in overall reporting at this pandemic stage, case numbers now offer limited clinical or epidemiological value. The Department of Health will continue to monitor trends and respond accordingly.”

“We were no longer relying on [case numbers] to even get a read on what was happening with the waves,” she said.“It’s very unusual to have self-reported test results as part of your [virus] surveillance. We don’t do that for anything else, and as time went on, it dropped.“I was estimating probably about 30 per cent [of positive cases were reported] as we opened up when people were very conscious of it, but that’s probably dropped away to something closer to 10 per cent.
