As Echuca and Kerang brace for flooding to peak in the coming days, many other areas of Victoria are starting to clean up after rainfall last week caused widespread damage in the state’s north.8.26amSES chief operations officer Tim Wiebusch has provided a flood update on the ABC’sWiebusch said 1,000 impact assessments had been conducted for flooded properties and he hopes waters will recede enough in Shepparton by the weekend to allow residents back in to access their homes.
Yeah, that’s definitely the case as we’ve been preparing for, for days. And no doubt, you’ve seen there on the ground, levees are being pushed up and [we are] sandbagging significantly. Nearly 200,000 sandbags have now been used in and around Echuca to try to protect properties or get it ready for protection. And then to the downstream communities from there, over the coming days and weeks.There are concerns from locals about supplies. I’ve seen for myself, supermarket shelves stripped bare.
“The costings came back much higher than expected, and so there was a conversation that was held in the community that was basically ‘would you be willing to meet the rest of the cost?’ Of course many in the community came back and said ‘no’.
