Venezuela has agreed to accept the return of undocumented migrants from the United States, following an agreement with the Trump administration. CARACAS — Venezuela announced on Monday that it had dispatched two aircraft to repatriate undocumented migrants from the United States. This move follows an agreement reached with the administration of former US President Donald Trump .
According to a statement issued by the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry, the planes were en route back to Venezuela after President Nicolas Maduro, seeking relief from crippling US sanctions, agreed with a visiting Trump envoy to accept the return of deported migrants and offered to provide the necessary transportation. The government asserted that it had been notified by the United States that some of the deportees were suspected of having affiliations with the Tren de Aragua gang or other criminal organizations. However, the exact number of Venezuelans being brought home was not disclosed.The announcement came a day after Maduro met with US envoy Richard Grenell in Caracas on January 31. Following the meeting, Trump took to his platform, Truth Social, to declare that Venezuela had agreed to receive back into their country all Venezuelan illegal aliens who had been residing in the US, including members of the Tren de Aragua gang. Trump further stated that Venezuela had also agreed to provide the transportation for their return. Grenell's trip to Caracas occurred despite Washington's refusal to recognize Maduro's reelection in a vote last year that was widely perceived as fraudulent. The envoy returned to the US with six Americans who had been detained in Venezuela. The specific benefits that Caracas derived from the talks remained unclear. Subsequently, Maduro called for a 'new beginning' in bilateral relations.
