In recent years, US warships — and, on occasion, those from allied nations such as Britain and Canada —In a statement, the US military said the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer Chung-Hoon carried out the transit. In a separate statement, Liu Pengyu — the spokesman for China's embassy in Washington — said China firmly opposed the move and urged the United States to "immediately stop provoking troubles, escalating tensions and undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait".
