The United States on Saturday called on China to show restraint as Beijing launched military drills around Taiwan, stressing that Washington was ready to meet its security commitments in Asia.
This undated screen grab made from handout video released on April 8, 2023 by Taiwans Ministry of National Defense shows Taiwanese military personnel at a undisclosed location, in response to Chinese military drills around the island. China launched military drills around Taiwan on April 8, in what it called a “stern warning” to the self-ruled island’s government following a meeting between its president and the US House speaker.
The United States has been ambiguous on whether it would militarily defend Taiwan, a self-ruling democracy claimed by Beijing, although for decades it has sold weapons to Taipei to help ensure its self-defense.
