US President Donald Trump invoked wartime powers to expel migrants, leading to the transfer of over 200 alleged members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua to El Salvador. The move sparked legal challenges and controversy.

The United States has transferred over 200 alleged members of a Venezuela n gang, Tren de Aragua, to El Salvador for imprisonment, President Nayib Bukele announced on Sunday. This move comes after US President Donald Trump invoked wartime authorities under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to expel migrants. The act, rarely used in peacetime and previously invoked during major international conflicts like World War I and II, allows a president to detain or deport citizens of an enemy nation.

\Trump's order, signed on Friday but not publicly announced until Saturday, faced immediate legal challenges from civil rights groups. A federal judge granted a temporary suspension of the order on Saturday, seemingly as planes carrying the alleged gang members were already en route to El Salvador. \Bukele, known for his tough stance on crime and soaring popularity in El Salvador, received the alleged gang members at the country's maximum-security Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT). He shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing several men in handcuffs and shackles being transferred from a plane to a heavily guarded convoy. Bukele had previously offered to house prisoners from the United States during a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio last month. Rubio expressed gratitude to Bukele for his role in the transfer, stating that 'hundreds of violent criminals were sent out of our country.' He added that alongside the Tren de Aragua members, two top leaders and 21 other wanted members of MS-13 gang were also sent to El Salvador to face justice. \Trump's order labeled Tren de Aragua as engaging in 'irregular warfare against the territory of the United States' and directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to enact the ruling within 60 days, making all Tren de Aragua gang members subject to immediate apprehension, detention, and removal. The detention and expulsion order applies to all Venezuelan Tren de Aragua members over 14 years old who are not naturalized US citizens or lawful permanent residents. However, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Democracy Forward, a legal advocacy group, filed a lawsuit against the deportations, arguing that the 1798 act was not intended for use in peacetime. Judge James Boasberg issued a 14-day halt to deportations under the new order, a decision that Attorney General Bondi condemned, stating it disregarded presidential authority and put the public and law enforcement at risk
