China has justified its coast guard's recent action against the Philippine Coast Guard in the waters off Ayungin Shoal—a move which the United States calls "irresponsible."
The incident happened on June 30 in the waters off Second Thomas Shoal . Ayungin Shoal is located 105 nautical miles away from Palawan province, a part of the Philippine exclusive economic zone , which China claims it owns. Carlson also called on China to comply with international law, including the legally binding 2016 Arbitration Award that turned in favor of the Philippines.
