JOHN'S, N.L. — On paper, if you jot down Newfoundland and Labrador’s abundant renewable and non-renewable resources in one column and its sinking debt in another, what the ink outlines before your eyes just doesn’t make sense.

Provincial government file photo - Staff file The panel was launched in May 2022 and consisted of industry experts, as well as appointees from the Innu Nation, Nunatsiavut Government and NunatuKavut Community Council. The panel and analysis was a recommendation from the Muskrat Falls Commission of Inquiry — itself a two-year look into another mismanaged, massively over budget and years delayed megaproject that added another huge financial burden upon the shoulders of the people of the province.
“The work of CREAT will help strengthen Newfoundland and Labrador’s negotiating position in advance of 2041,” government information states. “The team will be supported by officials from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador with experience in finance, legal, electricity and intergovernmental relations; Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro officials with knowledge about the opportunities on the Churchill River; and other government officials or NL Hydro resources as requested by the team lead.
There are a number of options to be considered to deal with Churchill Falls power, including the idea of an Atlantic Loop — with the Churchill Falls existing and future assets being “the battery” for supplying power to the Atlantic provinces.
