Unlisted no more: Sama Bajaus in Zamboanga City get birth certificates

MANILA - For the first time, members of the Sama Bajau group in Zamboanga City were given birth registration certificates by the local government of Zamboanga City, in cooperation with the United Nati

ons High Commissioner for Refugees and the United Nations Children’s Fund .

According to UNICEF, there are around 10,000 Sama Bajaus living in Zamboanga alone, but because of their way of life, around 85 percent of them do not have birth certificates.UNHCR and UNICEF are providing technical assistance to the project under the UNHCR-UNICEF Joint Strategy for Addressing Childhood Statelessness.

The pilot registration project started in October 2019. It aims to register 1,500 people in the community under the leadership of the Department of Justice.
