The UN children's fund, UNICEF , has raised concerns over the high rate of new HIV infections among young women and girls worldwide. In a report ahead of World AIDS Day, it highlighted that in 2023, 96,000 girls and 41,000 boys aged 15-19 were newly infected with HIV , with seven out of 10 new adolescent infections being among girls.

The report also noted that only 57 percent of children 14 and younger and 65 percent of teenagers aged 15-19 have access to lifesaving anti-retroviral therapy, compared to 77 percent of adults. Anurita Bains, UNICEF's associate director of HIV/AIDS, emphasized the need to prioritize children living with HIV when investing in resources and efforts to scale up treatment
