THE United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has adopted a resolution calling to promote and protect the human rights of 1.9 million seafarers worldwide. The Philippine-initiated resolution, A/HRC/56/L.4, was deliberated on during the 56th session of the UNHRC in Geneva on July 11.

Part of the resolution urged the shipping industry to “respect the right of seafarers” to decide for themselves on “whether to sail or continue sailing in high-risk areas.” At least one Filipino seafarer was killed, while 28 others were held hostage in separate incidents as the Houthi rebels staged sympathetic attacks against Israel, targeting ships they believe “related” or linked in some way to Israel.

The UN body also called upon states, as well as representatives of ship owners and representatives, to enhance the enforcement of the Maritime Labour Convention “to ensure safe and decent living and working conditions for all seafarers.”
