Prime Minister Keir Starmer plans to announce an 'action plan' to make the UK a world leader in AI and stimulate the struggling economy. The plan includes creating AI growth zones, increasing server capacity, and investing in AI research and development.
LONDON — Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to outline an 'action plan' on Monday to make the UK 'the world leader' in artificial intelligence (AI) and stimulate Britain's struggling economy. His Labour administration stated that AI would be 'unleashed' across the whole country, with the 'full weight' of its half a million-strong civil service backing the effort. 'Artificial Intelligence will drive incredible change in our country,' Starmer said in a statement late Sunday.
'From teachers personalizing lessons to supporting small businesses with their record-keeping to speeding up planning applications, it has the potential to transform the lives of working people.' Starmer will present more detailed information about Britain's approach to AI technology, which is raising complex issues for governments worldwide, during a speech later on Monday. In a Sunday press release preceding the address, the prime minister stated that the AI industry 'needs a government that is on their side, one that won't sit back and let opportunities slip through its fingers.' 'In a world of fierce competition, we cannot stand by. We must move fast and take action to win the global race. Our plan will make Britain the world leader,' he insisted. The government's 50 proposals include creating what it calls 'dedicated AI growth zones' designed to expedite planning applications for data centers and other AI infrastructure. It also plans to increase server capacity twentyfold by 2030, including by building 'a brand new supercomputer with enough AI power to play itself at chess half a million times a second.' The government said the proposals would enable the public sector to dedicate less time to 'admin.' It noted that hospitals are already utilizing AI to facilitate quicker breast cancer diagnoses and that AI has the potential to identify potholes and enhance road conditions. Starmer's administration added that AI could be worth £47 billion ($57 billion) to the UK annually over a decade. It announced that three tech companies — Vantage Data Centres, Nscale and Kyndryl — had pledged to invest £14 billion in AI within the UK, leading to the creation of more than 13,000 jobs. Starmer has prioritized revitalizing Britain's economy since assuming office last July. However, weaker-than-anticipated growth, rising borrowing costs, and a falling pound are complicating his efforts, potentially necessitating spending cuts or tax increases this year. Countries are grappling with how to leverage the benefits of AI while simultaneously regulating the technology amid concerns that robots could surpass human intelligence if left unchecked. AI is also increasingly being blamed for the proliferation of misinformation and deepfake pornography online
