Accelerated clean energy transition may lead to increased costs for consumers due to rising infrastructure costs and potential loss of competition.

The UK government faces the risk of imposing higher energy costs on consumers as it intensifies efforts to achieve its ambitious target of decarbonizing the country's power supply by 2030. Originally set for 2035, the deadline for a clean power system, relying on gas for less than 5% of its supply, has been brought forward to 2030.

However, this accelerated timeline may lead to increased prices for consumers, according to energy analysts from Cornwall Insight, Carbon Tracker, and Aurora Energy Research Ltd. Rising costs for raw materials and borrowing have made constructing new wind farms more expensive. Additionally, approving a large number of projects hastily to meet the target could stifle competition, further driving up prices. Tom Edwards, principal modeler at Cornwall Insight, cautioned that installing more renewables in the short term could lock in higher costs compared to waiting for manufacturing and installation expenses to fall. He also expressed concerns that the more ambitious target might reduce competition for new renewable projects, ultimately placing a greater financial burden on consumers. Achieving a balance between cost control and a rapid transition to clean energy is crucial. Rushing the process under the assumption that renewable energy is inherently cheaper carries inherent risks. During this year's election campaign, Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband promised that their plan to reduce greenhouse gases would save consumers up to £300 ($381) annually on energy bills by 2030. Starmer's spokesman, Tom Wells, reiterated last week that the government stands by independent modeling based on pre-election prices, which projected these savings from clean power by 2030. However, Aurora Energy Research analysis from earlier this year estimated that reaching net zero emissions in the power sector by 2030 would cost an additional £11.4 billion over the next 11 years compared to adhering to the 2035 deadline
