"We do not ask for conflict," Trump said, adding that depending on Iran's response the sanctions could end tomorrow or it"can also be years from now." Amid a flurry of diplomatic activity, the UN Security Council issued a unanimous call for dialogue to address the standoff between the United States and Iran.
"You cannot start a dialogue with somebody who is threatening you, who is intimidating you," Ambassador Majid Takht Ravanchi told reporters in New York. On Sunday, Trump told an NBC television interview that if it came to war, Iran would experience"obliteration like you've never seen before." Despite this, he has repeatedly said he's open to negotiations with Iran's leaders.Iran says it does not have a nuclear weapons program.
"All of these countries should be protecting their own ships," Trump tweeted Monday."We don't even need to be there."It's"100% right that the US military has no business in the Persian Gulf. Removal of its forces is fully in line with interests of US and the world," Zarif, the foreign minister, tweeted.
