Two highly unconventional films, Brady Corbet’s 3-hour-long postwar epic The Brutalist and Jacques Audiard’s genre-bending Spanish-language musical Emilia Perez, dominated the 82nd Golden Globes on Sunday. The awards, still recovering from years of scandal and restructuring, spread recognition across various films. However, the organization strongly supported these two unique projects.
\The Brutalist was crowned best film, drama, positioning it as a major force in the upcoming Academy Awards race. The film, shot in VistaVision and released with an intermission, also secured wins for best director for Corbet and best actor for Adrien Brody. \Corbet expressed, “I was told that this film was un-distributable. No one was asking for a three-and-a-half-hour film about a mid-century designer in 70mm. But it works.” \Emilia Perez clinched the best film, comedy or musical award, boosting its chances at the Oscars as Netflix’s top contender. It additionally won best supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña, best song (“El Mal”), and best non-English language film. Karla Sofía Gascón, the film’s transgender star who portrays a Mexican drug lord undergoing gender-affirming surgery, delivered a powerful acceptance speech. \“The light always wins over darkness,” said Gascón, referencing her vibrant orange dress. “You can maybe put us in jail. You can beat us up. But you never can take away our soul or existence or identity.” The evening’s significant acting awards included some unexpected triumphs
