The Universities of Adelaide and South Australia have taken a step closer to becoming a single institution which would catapult it into the world’s top 100.
David Lloyd, Vice-Chancellor of the University of South Australia.“We came together with a shared vision very early and an ambition that we found very easy to assimilate,” Professor Lloyd said.
The merger is not yet a fait accompli, with both universities agreeing to undertake a feasibility study which will explore the business case. They also need financial support from the state government to help cover transition costs.“We know that the business model of the new university works. It’s almost as if we stand on one side of the river and want to get to the other side, but we don’t have the boat to get there,” said Professor Hoj.
“Should, for some reason, the merger not go ahead, he will reserve the right, I assume, to make the commission make findings about what should happen next,” Professor Hoj said. Professor Lloyd said circumstances were different this time around “because we know about the fragility of institutions in the post-COVID era”.
