Our government, through the Philippine Sports Commission ,has been maintaining more than a thousand national athletes all these years to train and prepare them for international events, such as SEA Games, Asian Games, and ultimately, the Olympics. Unfortunately, we shall have only twenty or twenty two kids to represent us in Paris. Thanks to golf, another two got qualified just a few days ago. Doesn't sound impressive.
Remember the old days with Lydia de Vega, Elma Muros, Mona Sulaiman, and Isidro del Prado? All products of the Palaro. Now all I read are half Filipinos with Afro American roots. We're lucky we still have an EJ Obiena to make us proud. If we don't watch it, we'll soon have all dual citizens for the future Olympics. Just heard there will be a new DepEd Secretary this week. Hope he or she has some sporting blood in his or her veins.
