Former President Donald Trump announced plans to sign an executive order banning 'transgender ideology' from the US military, a move potentially reversing progress made for LGBTQ+ rights. This decision follows a history of fluctuating policies regarding transgender service members, with Democratic administrations aiming for inclusivity while Trump pursued exclusion.

MIAMI, United States — Former US President Donald Trump declared on Monday that he would sign an executive order aimed at eliminating what he labeled 'transgender ideology' from the US military. This move potentially represents a significant setback for LGBTQ rights. 'To ensure that we have the most lethal fighting force in the world, we will get transgender ideology the hell out of our military,' Trump stated during a Republican congressional retreat in Miami.

He designated this as one of 'four new executive orders' he planned to sign concerning the armed forces. Transgender Americans have experienced a tumultuous journey regarding policies on military service in recent years. Democratic administrations have strived to permit them to serve openly, while Trump has repeatedly sought to exclude them. The US military lifted a ban on transgender troops serving in 2016 during Democrat Barack Obama's second term. Under this policy, transgender individuals already serving were allowed to do so openly, and transgender recruits were scheduled to be accepted starting July 1, 2017. However, the initial Trump administration postponed the implementation date to 2018 before ultimately deciding to reverse the policy entirely, drawing criticism from rights organizations. Trump asserted that transgender service members were disruptive, costly, and undermined military readiness and camaraderie. Trump's successor, Democrat Joe Biden, reversed these restrictions shortly after taking office in 2021, emphasizing that all Americans qualified to serve should have the opportunity to do so. Biden's executive order reinstated the policy established by Obama. Nevertheless, Trump vowed following his election to a second term last year that he would 'get transgender out of the military,' among other rollbacks to transgender rights. While the number of transgender troops in the American military is relatively small, estimated at around 15,000 out of more than two million uniformed service members, their dismissal would reduce US forces at a time when the country is already grappling with challenges in recruiting new personnel. Biden's outgoing defense secretary, Lloyd Austin, seemingly criticized Trump's plans during a farewell address earlier this month, stating: 'Any military that turns away qualified patriots who are eager to serve is just making itself smaller and weaker.' Transgender issues have significantly influenced US politics in recent years, as states governed by Democrats and Republicans have adopted contrasting stances on policies encompassing medical treatment to the inclusion of books on the subject in public and school libraries
