President Trump establishes the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to cut federal agencies and jobs. The group, led by Elon Musk, faces immediate legal challenges from unions, watchdogs, and public interest organizations.

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on the inaugural day of his second presidential term, establishing an advisory group called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to oversee sweeping cuts to the federal government. The group, led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk , aims to eliminate entire federal agencies and reduce the federal workforce by three-quarters.

Co-chair Vivek Ramaswamy, a former Republican presidential candidate, has since stepped down to pursue a gubernatorial run in Ohio. Trump announced the DOGE during his inaugural address, stating it would restore competence and effectiveness to the federal government. However, the committee lacks official authority to implement any reorganization or drastic cuts. Despite its lofty goals, the DOGE has already faced immediate legal challenges from various government employee unions, watchdog groups, and public interest organizations. Among the plaintiffs are the National Security Counselors, the American Public Health Association, the American Federation of Teachers, and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. Another watchdog group, Public Citizen, has also filed a lawsuit. Neither Tesla nor the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, named as defendants in the lawsuits, has publicly commented. Advisory committees focused on reducing government waste are frequently announced but often achieve minimal results. A similar initiative launched during President Ronald Reagan's administration in 1982, which aimed to review executive branch spending, ultimately delivered its report significantly delayed and most of its recommendations went unimplemented
