President-elect Donald Trump announced that his inauguration ceremony will be moved indoors to the U.S. Capitol due to a severe cold snap expected in Washington, D.C. on Monday. The decision marks the first time in 40 years that an inauguration will be held indoors.
WASHINGTON - President-elect Donald Trump announced on Friday that his inauguration on Monday will be held inside the U.S. Capitol instead of outdoors due to a severe cold snap gripping the country. This marks the first time in 40 years that a U.S. presidential inauguration ceremony will be moved indoors. 'There is an Arctic blast sweeping the Country. I don’t want to see people hurt, or injured, in any way,' Trump stated on his Truth Social platform.
Therefore, I have ordered the Inauguration Address, in addition to prayers and other speeches, to be delivered in the United States Capitol Rotunda,' he added. The last time an inauguration was moved indoors due to frigid temperatures was in 1985 for former Republican President Ronald Reagan's second swearing-in. The afternoon wind chill dipped to a range of minus 10 to minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 23 to minus 29 Celsius). The weather forecast for Washington on Monday predicts temperatures around 19 F (minus 7 degrees C) at the time of Trump's swearing-in, but it will feel considerably colder with the wind chill factor. Trump assured supporters that they could watch the ceremony on screens inside the Capital One Arena, a sports venue in downtown Washington with a capacity of 20,000 people. Trump also revealed that his presidential parade, which was originally planned to feature marching bands and other groups proceeding down Pennsylvania Avenue past the White House, will be relocated inside the Capital One Arena. It remains unclear how a parade would be organized within the sports venue. Trump indicated that he would join the crowd at the arena after taking his oath of office. Trump is scheduled to hold a rally with supporters inside the same arena on Sunday, the day before his inauguration. The impact of severe cold has been felt at several past inaugurations. William Henry Harrison, the ninth U.S. president, delivered the longest inaugural address on March 4, 1841, in wet and cold conditions without a hat or overcoat. This event and his lengthy speech are believed to have contributed to his later death from pneumonia. He passed away one month after taking office, making his presidency the shortest in American history. During the second swearing-in ceremony for President Ulysses S. Grant on March 4, 1873, several cadets and midshipmen standing outside without overcoats collapsed. Gusting winds made Grant's address inaudible even to those close to him on the platform, according to a history published by the National Weather Service. The morning low temperature of 4 F (-15 C) on that day remains Washington's coldest March day on record

Trump Seeks to Delay Sentencing in Hush Money CaseFormer US President Donald Trump is making a last-ditch effort to delay his sentencing in the hush money case. He filed an appeal to a state court, hoping to overturn a lower court ruling that set the sentencing for January 10, just days before Trump's inauguration. Trump's legal team argues that a pre-inauguration sentencing would violate presidential immunity and needs to be halted. The case stems from a $130,000 payment made by Trump's former lawyer to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to prevent her from disclosing an alleged sexual encounter with Trump before the 2016 election.
