President-elect Donald Trump asserts that the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas wouldn't have been possible without his influence and pressures from his incoming administration. He criticizes outgoing President Joe Biden for taking credit for the deal, igniting a heated debate over the role each administration played in the negotiations.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a statement that drew immediate controversy, President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday asserted that the ceasefire and hostage release agreement between Israel and Hamas would never have materialized without the pressure exerted by him and his incoming administration. The agreement, which proposes the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, is currently pending approval from Israel's security cabinet before it can be implemented.
Following its approval, negotiations for a permanent resolution to the conflict are expected to commence. Four days before his inauguration for a second term, Trump, in an interview with the Dan Bongino Show, stated categorically that the negotiations would have reached an impasse without the intervention of his team, including Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. 'If we weren't involved in this deal, the deal would've never happened,' Trump declared. 'We changed the course of it, and we changed it fast, and frankly, it better be done before I take the oath of office,' he added. Israel's security cabinet was scheduled to convene on Friday to deliberate on the terms of the ceasefire, which, at the earliest, would come into effect on Sunday, just prior to Trump's presidential inauguration on Monday.Adding fuel to the fire, Trump launched a scathing critique of outgoing President Joe Biden for taking credit for the ceasefire agreement, labeling him 'ungracious' and stating, 'He didn't do anything! If I didn't do this, if we didn't get involved, the hostages would never be out.' Biden had previously proposed a ceasefire agreement in May, with terms that closely resembled the deal reached this week. The ceasefire agreement under discussion proposes an initial 42-day truce that would see the release of 33 hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza's densely populated urban centers. The second phase of the agreement could potentially pave the way for a 'permanent end to the war,' according to Biden. In an interview with MSNBC on Thursday, Biden indicated that he had not engaged in any recent discussions with Trump regarding the ceasefire negotiations.
