US President Donald Trump vowed to acquire Gaza, potentially allowing other Middle Eastern nations to assist in its reconstruction. His remarks sparked immediate controversy and condemnation.
US President Donald Trump stated on Sunday his commitment to acquiring and possessing Gaza , while suggesting the possibility of other Middle Eastern states participating in the reconstruction of sections of the war-torn territory. 'I'm committed to buying and owning Gaza . As far as us rebuilding it, we may give it to other states in the Middle East to build sections of it; other people may do it through our auspices.
But we're committed to owning it, taking it, and making sure that Hamas doesn't move back,' Trump remarked to reporters aboard Air Force One during his travel to New Orleans for the National Football League Super Bowl championship. He characterized Gaza as a 'demolition site,' stating, 'There's nothing to move back into. The place is a demolition site. The remainder will be demolished. Everything's demolished.'Trump also indicated openness to allowing some Palestinian refugees into the United States but emphasized a case-by-case evaluation of such requests. Ezzat El Rashq, a member of the Hamas political bureau, condemned Trump's assertions about purchasing and owning Gaza, asserting in a statement that 'Gaza is not a property to be sold and bought. It is an integral part of our occupied Palestinian land.' Rashq further declared that Palestinians would thwart displacement endeavors. This announcement follows Trump's earlier pronouncements regarding the permanent relocation of Palestinians residing in Gaza and the creation of a 'Riviera of the Middle East.' Last week, he proposed the United States assuming control of Gaza and undertaking a substantial rebuilding project, albeit offering vague details regarding the fate of Palestinians who have endured over a year of Israeli bombardment in response to a Hamas attack in October 2023. The legal basis for the United States' claim over Gaza remained unclear. Trump's declaration swiftly garnered criticism from numerous nations. Earlier on Sunday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog revealed that Trump is scheduled to meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and possibly Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, although he did not specify dates for these discussions.
