Tropical depression 'Querubin' has formed off the east coast of Mindanao, prompting the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) to raise Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 in Davao Oriental. The storm is expected to bring heavy to intense rainfall to parts of the country in the coming days.
State weather bureau PAGASA placed Davao Oriental under tropical cyclone wind signal no. 1 as the low pressure area (LPA) monitored over the east of Mindanao developed into tropical depression ‘ Querubin .’ Based on the 5:00 p.m. weather advisory, ‘ Querubin ’ was located 215 kilometers east southeast of Davao City or 245 km east of General Santos City. It was moving slowly with maximum sustained winds of 45 km per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 55 km/h.
PAGASA warned of heavy to intense rainfall in parts of Caraga and the Davao Regions, as well as Eastern Visayas, in the coming days to the combined effects of ‘Querubin’ and the shear line. Other provinces in Northern Mindanao, Calabarzon, and Bicol may also experience moderate to heavy rains. “Querubin is forecast to move east northeastward while slowly moving away from Davao Region over the next 12 hours before turning northward by tomorrow (18 December). This weather disturbance will then traverse Mindanao and Palawan area from tomorrow afternoon until Sunday (22 December) afternoon as a remnant low,” PAGASA said in its advisory
