Longtime Ireland correspondent McDonald, 57, lauded after untimely death following treatment for cancer
Family, friends and media colleagues expressed shock and sadness on Sunday after McDonald died at the Royal Victoria hospital in Belfast, where he was being treated for cancer.
Katharine Viner, editor in chief of the Guardian, said: “This is shocking news. Henry was a highly respected correspondent for the Guardian and Observer for most of his career. He broke countless stories and told them with integrity, eloquence and empathy.” Naomi Long, the Alliance leader, said McDonald was tenacious, perceptive and had a quick wit. “He will be desperately missed. Thoughts with all his family and friends, grieving his loss,” she said.
