B.C.'s Independent Investigations Office said this week its investigation had cleared the police officers who shot and killed Julian Jones on Feb. 27, 2021, in the Tla-o-qui-aht community of Opitsaht on Meares Island.

The Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council says it is devastated that the province’s civilian-led police watchdog has cleared RCMP officers in the fatal shooting of a First Nations man last year on a reserve near Tofino.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. said Tofino RCMP officers responded to a report of a woman being held against her will at a residence. Jones was shot and killed by police and another man was taken into custody during the incident. He said once the court process concludes, the IIO will meet with family and community members to review the investigation and answer questions.

In April, an Indigenous civilian monitor was appointed to look over a report by the IIO following the Meares Island shooting — the first time a First Nations monitor has been appointed in such a case and considered a step in building trust, according to the IIO. The matter will not be referred to Crown Counsel for consideration of charges, and the investigation is concluded, the IIO said.
