JURORS, JURORS. Former President Donald Trump visits a bodega Wednesday in the Harlem neighborhood of upper Manhattan where a worker killed a man who had assaulted him in 2022 in New York City. The worker, Jose Alba, was arrested, but the Manhattan district attorney dropped the charges for lack of evidence. Trump visited the bodega after spending a second day in court where he faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the first of his criminal cases to go to trial.
After a preliminary phase in Trump’s trial in which prospective jurors could opt out if they felt unable to be impartial or had extenuating circumstances, defense attorneys and prosecutors began questioning the candidates in depth.For Trump to be convicted of his alleged fraud in a scheme to cover up an embarrassing alleged extramarital encounter with a porn star, the jury must render a unanimous verdict. Even one dissenting voice would see him walk free.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden spent the day touting his economic policies in a visit to his birthplace in Scranton, Pennsylvania — a key swing state he narrowly carried in the 2020 election. Illustrating the extraordinary tension, potential jurors have been told they will remain anonymous to the public throughout the proceedings. Merchan said this is to protect them from possible bribery or physical harm.
A young Black woman in the pool of candidates said that, as a person of color, she has friends with strong opinions on Trump.A third possible juror said he found Trump “fascinating and mysterious,” prompting Trump’s lawyer Todd Blanche to respond, “Umm, alright. Thank you.” Trump faces three other criminal cases centered on his possession of top-secret documents after leaving office and his unprecedented attempts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Biden.
