Is it still a surprise?

Even though total sales tallies from other automakers aren’t in yet, Toyota is already at the top of the charts following its year-end review. With Lexus included, the Japanese automaker sold 10,159,366 vehicles worldwide.

That doesn’t even include two more of its subsidiaries, namely Daihatsu and Hino. With those added in, we’re looking at a whopping 10,821,480 units. With numbers like that, it puts Toyota and all its affiliates well ahead of the Volkswagen Auto Group. It also means the Toyota Motor group retains the title of world’s biggest automaker for the fifth year in a row.

Despite the astonishing numbers, Toyota’s total global sales are actually slightly down from 2023’s figures. The books show that Toyota and Lexus deliveries are lower by 1.4 percent. With Hino and Daihatsu included, the company’s total is 3.7 percent down compared to last year. There was no data on what the company’s best-selling vehicle was of 2024. That said, the Toyota RAV4 has, historically, been at the top thanks to the strong demand in North America and parts of Europe.

With first and second place secured, which automaker came in third? Per Motor1, the Hyundai Motor Group is likely to claim that. HMG registered around 7,230,000 sales in 2024 and includes the numbers from Kia, Genesis, and other brands under its wing.
