Tougher drink-scooting laws – including RBTs – urged for Qld

Queensland police are pushing for new powers to subject electric scooter riders to random breath tests, as authorities continue to grapple with the increasingly ubiquitous devices.

But police are limited in how they can enforce those rules as they are unable to randomly breath test riders of “personal mobility devices” such as e-scooters.“The [testing] rules, as they currently apply, require us to arrest people outright for being under the influence of liquor or drugs,” he said, noting riders could then be tested in a police station.

“As you can imagine, that’s quite difficult to do when they’re riding past you at 20 or 25 kilometres an hour on the footpath in Fortitude Valley.”
