Billionaire Judith Neilson says her journalism institute gave money to big mainstream media that could have been better used by smaller, grassroots outfits.
Billionaire philanthropist Judith Neilson says her journalism think tank directed funding towards mainstream media companies such as Nine and News Corp that could have been better used by smaller or grassroots publications.
“Mrs Neilson would like the reconstituted JNI to focus more on support for independent media, grassroots journalism, photojournalism, and journalism that looks to serve underrepresented groups within Australia,” said Simon Freeman, chief executive of the Judith Neilson Family Office. Ms Neilson launched the JNI in late 2018, committing to spend $100 million to build a journalism centre with global reach and ambitions. The organisation fell into disarray in June 2022 after deep divisions emerged between the former leadership and its patron over, among other issues, what she says was a plan to develop a Nobel Prize-like award in her name.
The Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas sits empty in the inner-city Sydney suburb of Chippendale.Since 2018, Ms Neilson has injected $75 million into the JNI through her Judith Neilson Foundation or Judith Neilson Head Trust, according to the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission.Of that, $37.6 million is accounted for in the value of the state-of-the-art Chippendale property and another $9.7 million held in cash.
