Goldman Sachs veteran Christian Johnston says he’s still loves investment banking, but he knows it’s time to hang up the boots.
Even at the humble age of 50, Goldman Sachs Australia’s top investment banker Christian Johnston still gets the competitive juices flowing each weekend during summer by throwing himself around the cricket fields of Melbourne.
Johnston’s self-awareness is both noble and rare. The bank’s local chief executive, Simon Rothery, says this honesty has been a hallmark of Johnston’s 30-year career, the last two decades of which“I was going to say CJ is the most honest investment banker I’ve ever come across, but he’s actually the most honest human being, frankly,” Rothery says. “That’s why he’s such a great adviser to corporates.
Ironically, it’s a deal that didn’t go ahead that Johnston says was his most memorable: BHP’s hostile takeover of Rio Tinto in 2008. BHP, which has long been one of Johnston’s most important clients, would eventually pull out of the bid, but Johnston says the cut-and-thrust was enthralling.
