Billionaire Clive Palmer has enlisted former attorney-general Christian Porter to his legal team as he chases a massive damages payout from Australia under international trade laws.

Clive Palmer is seeking almost $US200 billion in damages from Australia – roughly the same amount as earmarked for the nuclear submarine fleet under AUKUS – in a case related to stalled iron ore projects and emergency legislation passed by the West Australian government.

A spokesman for federal Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said the government would “vigorously defend Australia’s interests”. The federal government has been bracing for the legal claim since 2020-21 and last year was served with a consultation notice. Under the process, a panel of three arbitrators would decide the fate of the Zeph claim, with no rights of appeal.
