Canada’s eight Prime Minister, Sir Robert Borden, left secretly from Ottawa on this date in 1917. He was starting a journey to England for talks with UK PM David Lloyd George and leaders from the Empire’s other Dominions. With German U-Boats prowling the North Atlantic, it was a dangerous voyage. And as Borden was to write, it wasn’t only fears of submarines that made the trip so difficult.
“All the water pipes were frozen and my room was extremely cold,” Borden wrote of conditions aboard the. “For several nights I could get no sleep by reason of the horrible creaking of the expansion joint in my room. Night after night I made my way to the smoking-room where I managed to get a few hours sleep.”
“Meantime we were ploughing along through dense fog at full speed, without blowing our whistle or showing light …. We should have met the destroyers on February 20, but they were not sighted, although we were in wireless communication. I suggested to the officers than an effective way to avoid submarines would be to make a rendezvous with them and then try to keep it.”
On February 21 Borden and his party landed safely in Liverpool. “Wet with penetrating cold,” is how Sir Robert concluded his diary’s account of his voyage.is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist. He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney’s best-selling Memoirs and also served as a speechwriter to then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper and as a Fellow of the Queen’s Centre for the Study of Democracy under the leadership of Tom Axworthy.
