The House of Representatives majority bloc faces a dilemma regarding the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte due to limited time remaining in the 19th Congress. Despite three existing impeachment complaints, time constraints and the approaching campaign season are making it unlikely for the impeachment process to be initiated.
The House of Representatives majority bloc has shown reluctance to pursue the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte in the final days of the 19th Congress due to a significant lack of time. This stance is evident in the statements made by Surigao del Sur 2nd district Rep. Johnny Pimentel and La Union 1st district Rep. Paolo Ortega V, despite ongoing speculation about the fate of the three impeachment complaints filed against the Vice President.
Pimentel asserted on Monday, January 27, that there is insufficient time remaining to deliberate on the impeachment of Vice President Duterte. He pointed out that with only five session days left before the House recess and the commencement of the campaign trail, the time constraint presents a considerable obstacle. The five session days in question span Monday and Tuesday, January 27th and 28th, followed by three more plenary sessions scheduled for February 3rd to 5th before the recess. The campaign period for national election candidates starts on February 11th, while local candidates begin campaigning on March 28th, with the midterm elections set for May 12th.Ortega acknowledged that while the majority congressmen are not indifferent to the impeachment issue, the pressing time constraint seems to be a decisive factor. He stated that the matter has not been thoroughly discussed due to time constraints, suggesting that the current political climate may not be conducive to pursuing impeachment proceedings. All three impeachment complaints against Duterte were lodged in December 2024, partly stemming from allegations of misuse of P612.5 million worth of confidential funds by her office. The majority lawmakers hold the power to determine the fate of the impeachment process, given their numerical advantage in the House of Representatives. House Secretary General Reginald Velasco has yet to forward the impeachment complaints to the Speaker's office, pending a rumored fourth complaint expected from certain majority lawmakers themselves. The timing and likelihood of this fourth complaint remain unclear. President Marcos, a former ally of Vice President Duterte, earlier expressed the view that pursuing impeachment at this juncture would be inopportune
