Mark Butt and Lily Evans support each other mere inches from the ice. - Danielle EarlFor Newfoundland and Labrador pairs figure skaters Mark Butt and Lily Evans, the key word is"trust."

“It does take a lot of trust, so you’ve got to find someone who’s essentially fearless and isn't bothered by the aspect of being lifted and thrown across the ice," he says. “I think we realized that it was a successful pairing when we started to try some elements that usually were considered fairly difficult for a new pairs team, and we found that we were acquiring the skills fairly quickly,” he says.

“We usually hire a choreographer and they'll plan out some choreography,” says Evans. “And then, once we have a base, we’ll just practice and practice until we figure out something that is aesthetically pleasing.”“There's certain things that require a lot of flexibility, or something that maybe one partner can do that the other can’t, and you just see what’s comfortable, what works,” he says.
