Three passengers die after jeepney plunges into a creek in Quezon

Three people died while seven others were seriously injured when the passenger jeepney they were riding in fell into a creek in Macalelon town in Quezon on Saturday, April 1. | ManilaBulletin

A report reaching Camp Crame in Quezon City identified the fatalities as Markus Orillenida, Noel Orillenida III and Melvin Villaraza. The first two victims died on the spot while the third fatality succumbed to serious injuries in a hospital.

Those injured were driver Noel Orillenida, Nelanie Orillenida, Reggie Crispo, Anthony Albarico, Lorenzo Abrencillo and Rustom Crispo. They were all taken to the Gumaca Hospital.Based on the report, the passenger jeepney was travelling along a downhill portion of the road when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

As a result, the vehicle plunged into a creek which inflicted serious injuries on the people on board. According to the United Nations, an average of 35 road accidents happen in the Philippines with around 12,600 deaths every year. Based on the data of the Philippine National Police, among the usual causes of road accidents in the country are bad overtaking and over-speeding. Road safety experts also attribute the road accidents to road condition, improper roadworthiness inspections of vehicles and lack of signages and lighting.
