Voters expect to cut back on spending, as power prices and unemployment rise next year, according to a new poll.
Facing a grim national economic outlook and rising unemployment, nearly 60 per cent of Australians expect to cut back on household spending in 2023,Almost two thirds of voters told Freshwater Strategy pollsters they expected the affordability of energy bills to worsen again next year, along with the opportunity for Australians to own their own home.
Respondents were most positive about Australia’s progress towards net-zero carbon emissions, with 44 per cent expecting improvement, 40 per cent expecting things to stay unchanged and 16 per cent expecting a worsening. Voters were split on how Australia is faring more broadly: 44 per cent said Australia was generally heading in the right direction, while 42 per cent said the country was going in the wrong direction. Some 15 per cent were unsure.At 48 per cent, Victorians were the most likely to say the country was going in the right direction, along with Labor supporters and those on incomes of $150,000 or more .
The poll shows the voters are impressed with the new government and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, including some Coalition supporters.
