SOMEONE asked me recently what I ate during my recent London trip, and I answered quickly, without giving it much thought, “Potato Corner!” which cracked everyone up within hearing distance. And might I add, it was truffle fries which I never seem to have the luck ordering around our parts.
Successful Filipino-British entrepreneur Fred Ventura stands in front of his latest venture, Potato Corner, along with a Filipino-themed cafe.
And of course we sat down for an interview at where else? His Potato Corner at Earl’s Court, the hub of the Filipino community in Central London. But Fred, a handsome man of 51, says he wasn’t even remotely connected with the food business before he arrived in London. “In Manila, I was a policeman at Crame. I was a bad boy before,” he says, without going into much detail, “and my sister, who worked in Crame, told me the police force was improving, ‘Mag-pulis ka nalang kaya, luko-luko ka eh.
Ventura also owns a Filipino supermarket, Tindahang Pinoy, which has everything a Pinoy expat could ever want to cure the homesickness for the old country, from sinigang broth to popular white vinegar brands, along with Filipino chichiria and ensaymada. This columnist finally gets a taste of Truffle Fries at Potato Corner, Earl’s Court in London. The flavor is so popular in Manila that it always runs out.
