This Calgarian has already watched the Huberdeau Show: ‘He was a game-changer for us’ Flames
“He’s the guy that could turn the game around for us,” DeSerres recalled. “He would get the puck and he could singlehandedly make a play or a move and he was just clutch. You could always count on him. And it’s not like he was there just waiting for the puck to be given to him. He was going and getting it. He was top defensively, a smart player out there, but you just knew that out of nowhere he could make a play and change the game.
While Huberdeau doesn’t have a whole heap of Stanley Cup playoff experience, limited to 26 springtime skates over his 10 seasons with the Panthers, he didn’t seem to mind the pressure or the spotlight at the 2011 Memorial Cup. In the Sea Dogs’ crease, DeSerres racked up 34 saves that night in a 3-1 victory over the host Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors. He returned home that following season to stop pucks for the University of Calgary Dinos and later earned pro paycheques in the AHL and ECHL.
“I messaged him right after the trade because all my buddies are huge Flames fans and everyone was going nuts, just super excited,” said DeSerres, now a territory manager for Milwaukee Tool. “Just when everyone was down on the Flames and thinking, ‘Alright, time to rebuild,’ suddenly things start happening and everyone starts feeling like it’s a sudden upgrade, a surprise upgrade. Everyone was really excited so I messaged him to see where he was at. He got back to me right away.
