September is the time of the year when Filipinos start to celebrate the Christmas season. It is also the time when the Department of Health reminds the public – particularly the males – how to detect and prevent prostate cancer. International celebrities who either died of prostate cancer or have been diagnosed with the disease include Israel’s Moshe Arens, Belgium’s King Baudouin, Italy’s Silvio Berlusconi, France’s Charles de Gaulle and Francois Mitterand, Iran’s Ayatullah Khomeini, Ivory Coast’s Felix Houphouet-Boigny, Jordan’s King Hussein, South Africa’s Kat Liebenberg, Zaire’s Mhobhuto Sese Seko, Turkey’s Turgut Ozal, Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihanouk, and Canada’s Pierre Trudeau.
Prostate has two important functions: one is to help control urination and the other is to help sexual activity. The prostate has a so-called passive role in the process of urination. It helps to control the rate at which urine flows out of the bladder and into the urethra. The causes of prostate cancer are not well understood. Doctors cannot explain why one man gets prostate cancer and another does not. Researchers are studying factors that may increase the risk of this disease. Recent studies have found that age plays an important factor. In Asia, prostate cancer is most common among men aged 40 years or older.
