“We only have room for a partial exhibit. I have eight on the walls right now and they’re wonderful. The colours that are used and the scenes that they are depicting, they are beautiful works of art.” Woods was scheduled to give a presentation Feb. 2 at the Yarmouth County museum to detail the history associated with the quilt exhibit. He was to talk about “the secret codes that are supposed to have been used to guide escaped slaves to safety in the north,” Gates said before that official launch. “These quilts had certain patterns that represented directions or a secret code to help them find their way.

The Secret Codes exhibit represents quilt-making traditions from 40 Black communities in Nova Scotia during the past century. Selected quilts were hung in the Yarmouth County museum in late January. The local exhibit runs for all of February and continues through March 15.
