At least 57 children have been rushed to the Sydney children’s hospitals at Westmead and Randwick after near-fatal drowning accidents this year, prompting a warning from doctors and paramedics as families begin their summer holidays.

“Some children I have looked after are in a vegetative state. It’s very traumatic for everyone involved.” Between 35 and 84 children have been taken to the two children’s hospitals annually after a potentially fatal drowning accident in the past 15 years – 2020 was the worst year overall.Children aged under five represented roughly 60 per cent of those presentations.following a child’s first birthday. Forty per cent of the 549 drowning deaths of children zero to four over the past 20 years occurred when a child was one and crawling or walking. Half of those deaths occurred in pools.

“The quick actions of bystanders and loved ones can help save lives and reduce serious or long-term injuries before medical professionals arrive on the scene,” he said. “It is most often a family member who finds the child in a drowning incident, so every parent and carer needs to know the lifesaving skills of CPR. Any attempt at CPR is better than no attempt.
