THERE is supposed to be a news cycle that lasts for 24 hours. You are in the news, people bash you on social media, and then everything is forgotten. Two weeks ago it was Vice President Sara Duterte in testy arguments in Congress, followed by the capture of Alice Guo not in Wonderland but in Indonesia.
It was followed this week by the surrender of televangelist Pastor Quiboloy, wanted on a slew of charges from human trafficking to sexual offenses. But Sara is back again, this time because of her absence from Congress , whose members are going through the budget of the VP's office as if they are looking for the proverbial needle in the haystack. This forced lawmakers to propose either a cut in her budget — or transfer her funds to the line agencies.
Risa Hontiveros, another of Duterte's best friends, asked why the DepEd borrowed P6 billion from the World Bank in 2023 to fund the training of public school teachers when it failed to use the funding it got from the government for the same project.Hontiveros added that the CoA also found that DepEd did not pay P3.79 billion in mandatory contributions to the Government Service Insurance System, Philippine Health Insurance Corp. and the Home Development Mutual Fund .
