THE huge field in Seberang Perai, with two football grounds, was littered with young footballers, each group training with their own coaches in different parts of the field.
But one corner was special. A motley crew of girls and women were there, all sporting identical jerseys. They were of all ages – the youngest is just 15 and the oldest 47.It’s a group comprising housewives, businesswomen, clerks, company workers, a doctor, a physiotherapist and even a maritime science graduate.
The team had started out like any other, as an all-men’s team until two ladies Pavithra and Sumathi told team manager Sri Shankar that they would like to join in. With so many women involved, the Malaysian Indian Football Association were alerted and that led to the Poovai Soccer League, a national-level competition for state teams. The inaugural tournament was won by Kuala Lumpur.
Sri is now charting career paths for these women. Those over 30 are being sent for C-licence coaching courses while others are sent to refereeing courses.
