MONDAY, June 2, was Heat Action Day, an event primarily supported by the International Red Cross, along with other organizations, as part of a global campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of extreme heat.

A report published just ahead of the event by researchers from World Weather Attribution, Climate Central and the Red Cross Climate Center warns that 'heat waves are becoming longer and more likely with ongoing fossil fuel burning, but remain an underappreciated threat in many countries.

In 195 countries and territories — so essentially everywhere on the planet — climate change at least doubled the number of extreme heat days, compared with the no climate change temperature scenario. All 67 of the major heat events in the past year — defined as events that caused significant human casualties or property damage — were made more likely by climate change, the report adds.
