The country has showed astonishing courage and resolve in the face of the brutal Russian invasion, but the costs mount by the dayspoke in Warsaw and Moscow on Tuesday, the gulf between Russia and the west and its allies stretched a little further. Yet at the heart of two starkly different speeches lay a shared assumption: that this war will not end soon.
The Russian president assumed it would be over in days when he launched his brutal full-scale invasion of Ukraineon Friday. He was hardly alone. The courage and resolve of Ukrainians, and the rush of support from the west and its allies, was remarkable. Each day that Ukraine fended off defeat counted as a victory. Yet the parameters have shifted. In a war of attrition, time is usually on the aggressor’s side. Millions have been forced to flee their country.

During a recent unannounced visit to Kyiv, President Biden pledged further support as the one year anniversary since Russia launched its invasion nears. “Seeing American President [sic] visit Ukraine at this time, also at the time when Russians have started another assault on the country, was very important,” Mr Myroshnychenko told Sky News Australia. “Very important for Ukraine, for the Ukrainian people – but also, it’s very important for America and for Europe to see that transatlantic unity. “The visit of the President Biden to Poland and then making a trip to Ukraine was huge.” Mr Myroshnychenko said President Biden’s visit was “very symbolic” and “very strong”. “I understand it must have been not easy from a security standpoint of view to organise,” he said. “But I think it demonstrates American courage.”
