The 2032 Brisbane Olympics have caused a stir at home over stadium plans but for the International Olympic Committee a higher-stakes game is being played.

Plans to rebuild the Gabba for the Brisbane Olympics were scrapped due to cost concerns. An estimated $1.6 billion will now be spent on redeveloping the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre to host the athletic events.

Martin Müller, Professor of Geography and Sustainability at Switzerland's University of Lausanne, who has crunched the numbers for past Olympic Games and Football World Cups, agrees. The person who put together that report, former Brisbane mayor Graham Quirk, said he understood why the IOC vice-president became involved.

"Hosting the Olympics creates fiscal deficits of anywhere between 10 to 30 billion dollars, and more and more cities are realising that," he said. The organisers will now spend an estimated $1.6 billion to redevelop the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre at Nathan, 13km south of the CBD, to hold the 2032 athletics events.Although the revised stadium plans have been welcomed by Athletics Australia, they haven't pleased everyone.

"It's going to be very difficult and very challenging to do this and have it pay off fiscally, economically and environmentally," he told 7.30.
