Baseball great Willie Mays turned 89 on May 6 and, as in his past birthdays, the argument could be made on whether he was the greatest player whoever lived.
The rebuttal would be that he doesn’t hold any of the game’s major records. But Willie wasn’t about numbers though he put up his share. His cap flying, his legs churning, Mays caught up to most balls that dared invade his air space at centerfield. And when the ball moved into range, Mays would drop his hands to his waist, fold one on top of the others and let the ball gently drop into his glove. Mays’ unusual method, which translates hits or runs into outs, became known as the “basket catch” — a style few dared to duplicate.
Wertz swung at Liddle’s fastball in what looked like a potential double or three-base hit, but fortunately for the Giants the ball went in the direction of Mays at center. Knowing the ball was going over his head, Willie knew, too he would have a good jump on it.
