Eric Allaby tells the stories of more than 40 tragic wrecks on his book The Sea Wins: Shipwrecks of the Bay of Fundy . - ContributedIn the days of sail and steam, before radar and GPS, strong tidal currents and dense fog made the Bay of Fundy one of the most treacherous bodies of water in the world for ships.
On Jan. 21, 1782, HMS Blonde, originally built as the 36-gun French frigate La Blonde, struck a hidden reef off the southernmost point of Nova Scotia. Located about 27 kilometres west of Cape Sable Island and about five and a half kilometres to the south-southeast of the Seal Island light, the reef later became known as Blonde Rock.
“Suffering terribly in this bleak, windswept island in the dead of winter, they were providentially discovered two days later when two American privateers, the Scammell and the Lively, visited Seal Island in search of water,” writes Allaby. “When the landing party from the Lively discovered the castaways, a deal was struck: the prisoners would be released in exchange for the British sailors being set ashore in Nova Scotia.
“Caught up in the stories of valuable payloads, I hunted elusive ships and even more elusive cargoes,” he writes. A coming-of-age story that follows 13-year-old Nathalie Belliveau, the novel is based on the lives of two Acadian families and is grounded in the historic facts of the Deportation of the Acadians that began in 1755.Through their words and artwork, students of Nelson Whynder Elementary School celebrate their community in a colourful book, The ABC’s of North Preston.
