Before he died, veteran journalist Mark Colvin told me why he loved Twitter so much. “It’s like you’ve been let in on all the conversations of all the smart people you would have never had the chance to meet,” Colvin said around 2015, cradling a beer. He was right.

In the first four hours, more than 5 million accounts had joined Threads, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews. The Threads algorithm populates the feed with suggested posts which, unsurprisingly, means a trashy potpourri of celebrity content and engagement bait.

The challenge for Threads will be to lure celebrities, influencers and tastemakers away from other platforms,.
